AT WHAT AGE CAN KIDS START WRESTLING?
That is a hard question to answer. Each child is different. It mainly depends on their ability to focus. Practice typically runs about 1.5 hours (See youth practices). Since this is an important question, we offer new patrons a free session to see how their wrestler acclimates to the mat. We want your wrestlers to fall in love with the sport and have a positive experience. We recommend you watch the practice and see how your wrestler does. If you feel he/she is ready, SIGN HIM/HER UP! If you have concerns, speak to the coach. We will not be offended if you feel that it is not the right time to sign up for membership. However, we do hope you will come back when your wrestler is ready.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO WRESTLE?
Very little. Shoes are the big expense. A basic pair runs about $50 new. You can spend more than $200 but that is not necessary and will not likely improve your performance. If you have orthodontics you will need a mouthpiece. Typical practice attire is gym shorts, t-shirt, and athletic socks. No jewelry of any kind. No jean shorts or anything thing that can poke, cut or scratch.
Additional note: Wrestling shoes should be used ONLY on the MAT and street shoes should NEVER be worn on the mat! Think of everything that gets deposited on the ground. You don’t want your wrestler’s face rubbed on the ground and it will get rubbed on the mat. Also, hard sole shoes and ESPECIALLY spike heels can damage the mats.
